“So Down a Dirt Road
“Another view from the front porch.”
 Baconton, GA 18 January,1999

So down a dirt
Through a sea of pine
From the world’s deadly roar
I have come.
Back into the past
A quieter time
Where the struggle for life
Can be won.
The wind here blows free
That carries the leaves
I can hear the birdsong
In the air.
Where none of the fears
The broadcasters weave
Can corrupt the bright hope
That lives here.
Mayhem’s muffled roar
Sounds far over there
Somewhere over the trees
I can hear.
But the road that winds
Takes out the world’s care
Before passing my door
Not too near.
The rush from the crush
A hard one to make
Precious time has gone by
In my life.
Now deep silence lies
Inside of my gate
Near the red, winding road
Far from strife.
I’m glad to be here
In this sea of pine
Where time might stand still
For a while.
To just catch my breath
Enjoy what is mine
From the world’s raucus roar
I can smile.
