"Holes in the Earth"

Holes in the earth are quiet today
Where once a nation's dreams decayed
Both here and nations far away
A price too steep those nations paid.

A silent skull looks up at me
Through eyes that now no longer see
That seemed to say, "You could be me,
Lost in Hell's dark eternity.

Who I was you cannot tell
My soul is mixed in Torment's Hell
In some far province tears may well
When they sing chants or toll a bell.

I was forgotten til today
Until Fate's hand did lead your way
So you could view Pride's proud decay
Perhaps a prayer for me you'll say.

Just say "your memory I'll keep"
While I stay here in silent sleep
Then somewhere else ours souls might meet
A rendezvous of death we'll keep.

And maybe we've forgot the past
Our hands together we have clasped
Or was the die so firmly cast
That we've stayed foes all these years past?

I hope the time has truly come
When all the dead can count as one
And you will count the ghastly sum
To end, at last, War's deadly run.

If not, then someday maybe you
In Death's array will be in view
And other's eyes will see you too
Deep in the earth when War is through."
And as the Sun's light came in view
So too this silent thought was through
"Fear Not, I Will Remember You
And the Others Lost Beside You Too."
